*****
Another fantastic Sanderson book. Honestly, I should give all of them 5 stars and just be done with it. He's a phenomenon, a hurricane and instead of bringing destruction, he brings an exhilaration and emotional intensity like never before.
The book opens with a man named Vasher killing someone and introduces us to something called the Breath. There is a war brewing between two kingdoms- Hallendren and Idris with Hallendren having access to undead warriors and all kinds of magic. At such a time, a princess from Idris comes to be sworn as the bride of the king of Hallendren. How she copes in a foreign world, trying to prevent war and uncovering layers upon layers of deceit and treachery makes up for the crux of the novel. Parallel plots help the story to move forward with a surprise twist always round the corner. The beautiful thing is that the magical system is not explained at once, rather bits and pieces are strewn here and there for the reader to pick up and devour.
This one is a fantasy thriller at heart. The book encompasses the mystery skills of Agatha Christie, fantasy elements of Sanderson, awesome cussing moments of Gillian Flynn and a strong central woman character characteristic of Sidney Sheldon.
The journey of Vivienna and Vasher from a flawed human to a redeemable person at the end is breathtaking. These two epitomizes the height of self-righteousness. Vivienna specially, came across as an obnoxious person , trying to 'save' her people when in reality she is just trying to change the world in her image as most of us have tried in our lives. But when presented with the harsh realities of this life, the fragile bubble of her utopia breaks and she comes face to face with the real mirror of life. Vasher on the other hand is trying to atone for his crimes done centuries before and he is the quintessential anti-hero, brooding, willing to cross every boundary for what he believes to be right.
But the star who steals the show is Lightsong, a god to his people of Hallendren. His is a journey of self discovery, the search for his purpose in life. His monologues and dry remarks are refreshing and his tenacious effort to live a quotidian life makes for quite a bit of fun.
Warbreaker is the first book I found having numerous sexual innuendos. While they do help in driving the plot forward, one cannot help but think that some of them may have been reduced. Also the final mystery revelation seems sorta tame to me. Maybe a more explosive end could have been written. But then, we will always have something to complain to our 'God' however much we may want perfection.
I started this book sometime around noon. How good a book it is can be gained from the fact that I could not, would not put the book down until 3:30 in the late night. I just had to finish it, damn the consequences. With the second book in the pipeline, this series assures a constant supply of our dose of Sanderson addiction. Cheers!!
P.S - The best part is that this book is absolutely free and available at http://brandonsanderson.com/books/warbreaker/warbreaker/warbreaker-rights-and-downloads/#versions !!!!!!
